BoyWiki Dictionary: Prepubescence
v

¹ Preadolescence is a stage of human development following early childhood and preceding adolescence. It generally ends with the beginning of puberty, but may also be defined as ending with the start of the teenage years. For example, dictionary definitions generally designate it as 10–13 years. Preadolescence can bring its own challenges and anxieties.[1]

Prepuberty vs. Preadolescence

Preadolescence is a fairly recent term, one which apparently seeks to "desexualize" the pubertal stage of human development. The word "puberty" has very strong sexual connotations, while "preadolescence" is more neutral and sterile and therefore (to sexophobes and antisexuals it is a much "safer" term.

Puberty actually (contrary to popular belief) begins at the advent of adrenarche, which usually begins to occur around the ages of 6 to 8, when a very important series of hormonal changes occur within the young person's body, which causes sexual interest to heighten at this stage (if that interest is not artificially repressed by society's concerns about "correct" morality.)

Gonadarche has been traditionally considered to the the onset of puberty; gonadarche is responsible for the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics, such as the growth of axillary (underarm) hair, pubic hair, the enlargement of the penis and scrotum in males, and the enlargement of breasts in females, etc.
