[[Stand By Me]] (1986) is considered by some to be one of the all-time classic boy movies.

It follows a group of four 12-year-old boys who go off to the woods in search of a missing body. They aim to find and report it, in the hope that they will gain fame and a small reward.
They find their journey more difficult than they imagined beforehand, and they have to rely on each other for support and friendship. Gordie ([[Wil Wheaton]]) and Chris ([[River Phoenix]]) are particularly close.
The boys find that they learn a lot about life and friendship in the two days they spend on the journey.

This highly emotional film with a couple of cute boys would probably be enjoyed by many boylovers.
====The Book====

Stand By Me was based on the novella [[The Body]] by [[Stephen King]]. While the movie is top-notch, it avoids the issue included in the novella where King insinuates in the epilogue that Gordie and Chris were sexually involved later into their high school years.

'''Bernard Faucon''' (1950- ) is a French photographer and writer.

Faucon was born in Provence, [[France]] and attended the Lycee d'Apt. From 1969 he studied philosophy and theology and graduated from the University of Sorbonne in 1973. He worked as a painter from 1966 until 1976 and then as a photographer until 1995 when he voluntarily chose to stop.

Faucon makes staged photography, using medium format cameras. His style, —saturated colors and surrealism, rooms and natural settings, boys and mannequis for subjects—reveals a love of youth and dreamy beauty. His work has been compared to that of Jan Saudek.

His major photographic series are, in date-order: Les Grandes Vacances (1976-1981); Évolution probable du Temps (1981-1984); Chambres d'Amour (1984-1987), Chambres d'Or (1987-1989); Idoles et Sacrifices (1989-1991); Les Écritures (1991-1992); and La Fin de L'image (1993-1995). From 1997 to 2000, he organized in twenty countries around the world, the event "The Happiest Day of My Youth" involving one hundred young people in each country. His first book of texts only, ''La peur du voyage'' appeared in 1999.

Faucon has won numerous awards from his work, including the Grand Prix National de la Photographie (1989), and the Prix Leonard de Vinci (1991). Since 1977 he has had nearly 250 solo exhibitions. In 2002, the Moscow House of Photography held a Bernard Faucon Festival, and he was invited to officially open the Moscow Biennale.
==Regarding Security==

By the same token, this same image hosting loophole allows vandals and miscreants to register pretending to be a normal user, post an innocuous picture that gets approved by the volunteers, then later change the actual image ''at the image host'' to something detrimental to the site, such as gruesome autopsy images, or even [[child pornography]]. It could be some time before a moderator catches such a change, as there's no change that shows up in the board logs. Thus, a quandary arises: since many of the forums are alleged to exist for the purposes of image trading, the caution to turn off images serves to diminish the value of those forums considerably for so long as offsite image hosting is allowed. The problem could be substantially resolved if the board provided onsite, moderated hosting, but that suggestion always falls on deaf ears, making some wonder how deep the concern for safety actually is.

(Within the last couple of years, another alternative has arisen, in that the board could force members to use a single free hosting service, such as tinypic.com, that allows individual, uneditable uploads. Since this providers would not allow images to be altered once uploaded, this would also close the loophole, assuming the original image posting is still subject to approval by moderators.) --[[User:Afin|Afin]] 08:31, 14 September 2005 (EDT)
::Does this practice have a name? If so, would you write a short article about it and link it in-line at the BLN article? If not, we might try to think of a name. "Link framing" springs to mind, since the perpetrator is "framing" BLN for a crime through a link.--[[User:Asch|Asch]] 21:23, 14 September 2005 (EDT)
::Doh -- just saw you on the curator list. As a curator you hardly need be reminded to write articles... :) --[[User:Asch|Asch]] 21:47, 14 September 2005 (EDT)

It's a form of trojan linking, but I'm not sure that really needs to be covered in a separate article. Does it? It seems very tangential to BWiki's primary focus. Also, on another security-related note, UBB boards are known to allow private, restricted areas. That is an additional risk factor to be assessed when considering joining. --[[User:Afin|Afin]] 01:25, 15 September 2005 (EDT)

:Afin - that image switching thing is a theoretical danger - I've never seen it happen in all my years I've spent at boylover.net. It's like security holes in internet explorer - some are big - like the employment of ActiveX - and some are very small. It's not worth being overly concerned over things that don't have enough of a danger about them, to warrant it. We are human. We can't go about wearing metal plate armor because we live in a more unstable part of town. If that first paragraph, is indeed yours, I can tell you that you talk as an outsider with peripheral observation, rather than an in depth hands on understanding of how things actually occur in real life experience. An article on boywiki is not the place to be badmouthing other boylove communities. -- [[User:Marc|Marc]] 22:10, 21 September 2005 (EDT)

::External image linking is an incredible security risk. I don't think this is in dispute. BL.net admin have a known history of handwaving security concerns. It is not "badmouthing" other resources to say "these are security issues you should be aware of before visiting." It simply allows others to make their own judgement about their security and be prepared before they visit. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 22:44, 21 September 2005 (EDT)

:::Well, this is the first article I have passionately thought that I might contribute to, but seeing as I have the owner of the board saying he doesn't want me to do so... who knows? I could have spent all this time writing the article about bl.net - I know the board like the back of my hand. I have been immersed in it. I suggest that there should be an article written about concerns, which specifically relate to ubb software. And then, there can be a link from here to that article. It's not fair to color the whole tenor of the article about bl.net with a prejudicial attitude. I understand that you're concerned about the safety of those who read what you write - that's a very valid concern. But it can be dealt with, in a more polite manner, in the article. -- [[User:Marc|Marc]] 23:11, 21 September 2005 (EDT)

::::Yes, the article needs a lot of work and I've said as much in comments further below. But external images are not a generic UBB problem. They are a configurable feature and BL.net's configuration merits mention in the article--preferably as a link to a security article but they don't yet exist here. I don't see where I told you not to contribute to the article. But I do expect contributors to neither overhype nor make excuses for poor security configuration. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 23:55, 21 September 2005 (EDT)

:::::I'm somewhat new to wiki writing. With bulletin boards, you have to jump right into a conversation, the moment that it is proposed. With wiki writing, of course, one can't be editing at the very instant as someone else. You kind of have to let the other person fill out the article to a point, where it has some cohesiveness, and then, if you can improve it from there, after a couple days of downtime, you can. Perhaps that was the nature of my impropriety, yesterday... Sorry. --[[User:Marc|Marc]] 22:32, 22 September 2005 (EDT)

::::::But look what happened: three reverts and then it was taken to this talk page. Exchanges were heated but didn't harm the article. Others took notice, and a third party made changes to help tone down the article while still representing differing points of view. Everyone calmed down, and you decided to take a break and come back fresh. And now you learned how wikis are different than message boards (not as fleeting, for one). Aside from security concerns and server downtime, there is a lot of history about BL.net that could be mentioned in the article. I hope you'll come back and share some of that with us. All in all, I'm proud of everyone who respected BoyWiki enough to fight here and not in the article. This is how wikis should work. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 22:56, 22 September 2005 (EDT)
== Downtime ==
Somebody knowledgable should probably write about BLN's downtime (last year if I remember correctly), as that seems like a fairly significant event in its history. [[User:Clayboy|Clayboy]] 17:22, 21 September 2005 (EDT)
==Appearance of endorsement==

Hey guys, the way this article is written now it looks like we're endorsing these guys. I've added just a couple small comments attempting to make clear that BL.net is dangerous. [[User:Jimf3|Jim]] 18:15, 21 September 2005 (EDT)

:I reverted your changes to the Mission Statement section because you changed quoted text. What needs to happen is that a new section is started talking about the very real security concerns that the board raises. I would also like to see the Mission Statement section rewritten. I don't like having quoted text in the article at all (but until it's replaced, it stays verbatim). --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 19:38, 21 September 2005 (EDT)

::OK, I'll just put it right under the mission statement so that people reading it will not tend to think that WE are saying that BL.Net is safe. That's what I thought when I read it.
::Why do we have their mission statement on our site, anyway? [[User:Jimf3|Jim]] 19:42, 21 September 2005 (EDT)

:::Jim, we have their mission statement on our site because somebody put it there. I don't think it is out of place--it is very clearly a quote from their site. The "Security" section directly above the mission statement was a better place for your comments and in fact it already warned against external images. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 22:44, 21 September 2005 (EDT)

:::Dear Jim, a wiki is - by definition - of the ownership of the public - anybody who has written it. Freespirits, as I understand, hosts and support this wiki, financially. But the writers are those who create the resource. I am also a contributor to this wiki, and I am very much in support of what BL.net is doing. I have spent years there immersed in that community. I believe that this article ought not to be written from a perspective of an outsider's uneducated perspective - but instead the article ought to tell what life is like in that community from the perspective of those who have participated there [[User:Marc|Marc]] 20:29, 22 September 2005 (EDT)

:::: Marc, you are correct in saying that it is the writers who make this resource. If you want the article to show what life is like inside the BL.net community, it's up to you, or someone like you, to write that part. I'd be interested in reading it, too. --[[User:Afin|Afin]] 18:29, 5 October 2005 (EDT)

:::::Afin what is a wiki? A wiki is like a little valley where people start settling, to form a community. Well, what if a person of Arab descent vacations in that village, thinking that he might move there - and he hears people talking about muslims and the middle east as being the source of the world's terrorism problems. If he grew up in Saudi, or in Pakistan, or in Egypt, or elsewhere in the area, he knows his background, he knows his culture, he knows that the way people talk in that small village reflects an outsider's skewed perspective. But, does he feel welcome in that village, and does he want to settle there? The answer is no. In the same way, if the management and the writers here at boywiki say that they have to draw up sides and say that one bulletin board is bad, and the other is good, will those from those bulletin boards which are deemed bad, want to invest the time and energy in building themselves a life here? The answer is no.

:::::Now, to qualify this, I think that the social chemistry at this wiki, or any wiki will develop to where there is an even keel, and people are accepted - and their origins are accepted. Writing is a big investment of time for anybody. It takes hours upon hours. I don't feel obliged to offer that investment here, if the community which has nurtured me is set at nought here. [[User:Marc|Marc]] 01:31, 6 October 2005 (EDT)

Mark, I'm not sure who you are, but you should be aware that the seizure of BL.Net's servers is not a rumor. While the BL.net admin went to some links to hush it up, the seizure is unfortunately a fact. [[User:Jimf3|Jimf3]] 20:18, 22 September 2005 (EDT)

:Dear Jim3, I have been a member at boylover.net under this same user name - marc - since 2002... That is the internet community in which I have spent the most time, over the years... There was a panic about the servers having been seized by law enforcement last winter. However, it was recognized eventually that it was an offhanded comment by the isp who hosted the site, which was misinterpreted by the boylover.net management... My impression is that the ISP had apparently interviewed with law enforcement who were curious, but that no legal action was taken. The ISP got spooked and boylover.net was dropped from their client list. [[User:Marc|Marc]] 20:24, 21 September 2005 (EDT)

::Marc, I very much doubt that that's true. One of the leaders of BL.Net posted in rather extensive detail about the server seizure at one point, even indicating which branch of law enforcement had the machine/machines in its possession. It would seem beyond odd that such detailed information would later be found to be untrue. Given BL.net's very unfortunate attitude toward security, it would not be hard to believe that they would want to later downplay what happened.
::And the article as written before my comments seemed like a very rosy endorsement of BL.net. That would be an odd position for Free Spirits to take, given the overwhelming opinion of BoyChat participants that BL.net leaves much to be desired in terms of being realistic about security.
::I don't think it's wrong for BL.net to have a mention here but if it does, then surely our views of BL.net's serious security problems need to be given some prominent space. [[User:Jimf3|Jimf3]] 20:43, 22 September 2005

:::I'm sorry, my friend. Facts are not debatable. And your opinions do not qualify as facts. This wiki is a resource which needs to be accurate. If you have concerns about bulletin board safety, please write a separate article, detailing the mechanics and administrative issues of different popular bulletin board software suites. Elaborate there on your theories of what is and what isn't appropriate for childlove bulletin boards. Yes, the admins were convinced of a severe problem... but eventually, it was understood that the problem was lesser than was imagined. - [[User:Marc|Marc]] 20:56, 21 September 2005 (EDT)

::::Mark, it is a fact, and an undisputed fact at that, that administrators at BL.net do not take proper security precautions and that they poo poo people who warm them about their problems. I know that because I'm one of the people who has provided warnings and advice about how to take simple steps to keep things safe.
::::The fact that they know what the dangers are - have had those dangers explained by many people - and that they choose to do nothing is very disturbing.
::::And that's a fact - not an opinion. [[User:Jimf3|Jimf3]] 21:20, 22 September 2005 (EDT)

:::::"An undisputed fact" is it? How many people do you know who would agree with you about this? This is a boychat-specific perspective. Boychat has it's own guidelines - both for what is posted, and how the bulletin board is administered. There's a word which I believe fits very well for your feelings about boylover.net. That is "ethnocentric". If they don't do things the way you do things at boychat, you believe that they do things wrongly.

:::::Boylover net has really advanced the cause of the childlove internet movement. It is a place where the actual dream which we have, can be partly realized. We can discuss with eachother, and youth and even children, the issue of pedophilia. This was a very historic advance in the movement. They also allow people to think visually, about their affection for children. The decision to allow photos, is a daring move, which will have politically achieved that right for all of us.

:::::Such photos could not be hosted on the boylover.net server - that is more dangerous, politically for boylover.net, than having such photos retrieved from elsewhere, on the net.

:::::The only thing I've heard of that is a danger with outside photos, is IP harvesting. There's nothing anybody can do with those numbers, in reality. They can find the physical location of people. But there is no way that they can attach an ip with a user name. There is no way for them to find personal details about that individual. Many curious souls have browsed bl.net for a short time, and their presence would, of course, be mixed in with the batch. Government agencies may be able to research the identity of people through their ip's - but citizens cannot. That board is extremely busy - at least a hundred people at any given moment of the day are browsing there. There is safety in numbers.

:::::Yes, there are other ways in which the UBB software is insecure - moderators can see IP addresses, for instance. However, the real risk is not from writing at bl.net - it's from actions taken outside the board. Never, in the years I've shared my thoughts there, have I heard of anyone being found out through some esoteric technical means. It has occasionally occurred through misplaced trust of people they met there. -- [[User:Marc|Marc]] 22:22, 21 September 2005 (EDT)

::::It is a matter of public record that the administrators at BL.net have stated that the servers were seized by the FBI. If this is not true, we need to hear it from them. Since then, one in particular has said that he doesn't know where the servers are and that he doesn't care. It is clear that there is a lack of concern for security and safety compared to the standard that Free Spirits has. This is okay--everyone chooses what precautions he is willing ot take, but it is important for people to know about things like external image linking so they have the opportunity to visit through an onion proxy or with images disabled, or even disagree that it's a serious risk.
::::I agree with Jimf3--the admin at BL.net have been at times even hostile to suggestions that security might be a problem. This article is in serious need of a rewrite, but information should be presented neutrally and not suppressed for political reasons.
::::I do want to thank the two of you for bringing this to the talk page before it became an edit war. I'm confident that you will show as much reason in helping to edit the article. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 22:44, 21 September 2005 (EDT)

I'm probably far too tired to be writing a message like this, but here it goes...

First, your main beef is the fact that members are allowed to host and use their own images within their signatures. Can you please provide me of a single reference where someone has been charged or even investigated because they were browsing a message board, and one of the thousands of members on that board used an illegal picture in their signature? The one problem with BoyChat is that you're far too paranoid for your own good.

Yes, BLnet allows its members to host and use their own images. Has this ever caused a major problem? No, not once. Every once in a while there is a minor problem with this, but all in all, there is no problem whatsoever. I'd also like to say, take the amount of resources available to moderate BoyChat, times that by at least 10, and you have the moderation resources of BLnet. From my experience, BLnet has a great deal more moderators and resources to manage the board.

The next thing you talk about is the server "seizure" that happened well over a year ago. There has not once been any actual confirmation on these seizure, as the previous web hosting company completely ignored all communication from BLnet (I could be wrong about this). Instead, it's very highly likely that the previous web host simply pulled the plug, and said the server had been seized to ensure they didn't get themselves in legal trouble by violating their own Terms of Service. Besdies, if the server was actually seized by law enforcement, we would have seen dozens of articles in the media by now, saying the largest online pedophile ring has been taken down, and whatever else.

All in all, BLnet is perfectly safe. If it wasn't, it wouldn't have lasted this long. [[User:Thetes|Thetes]] 02:24, 22 September 2005

: You do understand that off-site images mean that the guys running the image server are able to tell that you are reading BL.net, right? The potential for illegal images is bad, but hardly even relevant in comparison to that. Whenever I read BL.net, I make sure to use a proxy like Tor and/or turn off image display in my browser (which is good so I can focus on the discussions instead of the huge images of cute boys ;-). [[User:Clayboy|Clayboy]] 02:24, 22 September 2005 (EDT)

The scope of this article is very clearly biased towards dissuading the the reader from joining and/or participating in BL.net. I think it's safe to say that the truth about the so-called server seisures still falls under rumor status. The remark about the site administrators "cavalier attitude" could never remotely be considered neutral and has been removed. [[User:Jeff04|Jeff04]] 02:47, 22 September 2004 (EDT)

== Let's try working this out ==

I have edited the article in an attempted first step toward resolving the dispute. I moved all security concerns to the Security section and reformulated them, trying to attain neutral point of view (NPOV). I have tried to retain all the different opinions (even an, IMHO, irrelevant comment about private messages).

Please, read through the article before making edits. Some of the controversy might have been avoided if security concerns were placed in the right section instead of at the top and at the bottom. If I may say so, I do not believe the first version of the article endorsed nor forcefully criticized BLN.

I wish to stress that it is not BoyWiki's mission to be a mouthpiece for Free Spirits. However, the security concerns are widespread and should be noted in any complete and balanced treatment of BLN. These concerns must be expressed in a non-confrontational manner using, as far as possible, NPOV.
::It does seem strange how they haven't said anything in a while, nor have they said anything further about the site from the "inside" point of view. If anyone wants to review some of the discussion from BoyChat at the time this happened, some of the threads were saved in the '''In The News''' section of the December, 2004 Digest, here: https://www.boychat.org/bcd/2004-12.htm<br><br>Let's leave the marker in place for a while longer. In the meantime, I disagree with the decision to remove the concern over private messaging, which I think should not only be stated but also extended to mention private boards. I also find disingenuous the claim that IP addresses are useless to non-LEO. If you're coming from an IP that resolves to room29.somedorm.someuniversity, desk3.smallprojectname.somecompany, or somestation.branch.locallibrary, for example, malicious people may try to publicize that and/or contact system administrators for the domain, especially if the logs show that you didn't just hit one or two images, but several images over the course of several days. Sure, people should know better than that, but most people using the internet these days don't know what an IP address is, so you can't expect some newbie to know. This should neither be disregarded nor dismissed as a non-issue. Even if in practice the actual exploitation of this is rare, it makes sense to either close the hole or warn people that it's known but left open. Since we know about it, we have that obligation to mention it. I would expect anyone who knows of security issues with BoyChat to make the administrators aware, and if they have chosen not to act, to warn others, also. --[[User:Afin|Afin]] 17:30, 5 October 2005 (EDT)

:::I had trouble understanding why PMs would be more dangerous than, say, e-mail. But the more I think about it, the more likely it seems that law enforcement and judges would have an excuse to confiscate and search the server when it is directly involved in hypothetically illegal communication. Still, I find it a bit far-fetched that any significant illegal activity would happen there, not to mention be discovered, especially since PMs don't allow attachments. Being ambivalent to the sentence (and rather eager to encourage participation from non-FS members of the community), I won't put it back, but neither will I argue if you do.<br />&mdash; [[User:Asch|Asch]] [[User talk:Asch|talk to me]] 20:29, 13 October 2005 (EDT)

'''BoyLover.net''', commonly abbreviated as '''BLN''' or '''bl.net''', is one of the world's largest online [[Boylove community|boylover communities]]. The site was created by [[LostBoy]] and launched on May 1, 2002. It was completely re-designed later that year and launched again on December 1, 2002. Within six months it had attained a membership of over 1200, rising to 3000 a year after the initial opening, and has long since passed the 20,000-member mark. The substantial numbers of the participants creates a lively environment, with approximately 700 posts a day.

In July 2003 BoyLover.net spawned a companion website, [[BoyLoverLinks.net]], which catalogs and presents a diverse collection of links of interest to boylovers.

==Features==
Though its main language is English, BoyLover.net hosts a large number of [[forum|forums]] in numerous languages through a uniform interface. Languages ranging from Swedish to Hungarian are represented in designated rooms, as are special topics like creative pursuits and games. A popular forum offers publication of private photographs of boys. The youth who participate have their own discussion room, in which adults are not allowed to participate.

Discussion is served by the Ultimate Bulletin Board interface, which serves threads "flat" (i.e. without subthreads) and automatically brings recently discussed topics to the top of each index. Site design is heavily featured by large, illustrative photographs, strong use of bright colors, and a multitude of icons. Color scheme is occasionally transformed completely, in recognition of significant or tragic events, to a monochromatic theme.

Members are categorized according to their post count, with a member starting as "New Kid" and eventually becoming "Elder Brother" at 5000 posts. While this makes it simple to tell oldtimers from newbies, it often leads to members posting playfully in order to increase their post count, and hence their status.

Site management is highly organized, and a team of Buddies are responsible for welcoming and guiding new members of the community. Highly respected members may be named Mentors. To date only one member, Friend, has been named Mentor.

==Security==
BoyLover.net's rules and guidelines are intended to safeguard the site's legality according to [[United States]] law. A complex, three-tiered organization of nearly 100 volunteers serves users of the site and enforces site policy.

According to site administrators, BoyLover.net's servers were recently seized by law enforcement authorities. The implications of this event (and whether the seizure actually took place) is in dispute.

Site administrators have been criticized for taking a cavalier attitude toward security problems.
Furthermore, some portals have warned against BoyLover.net on grounds that the site allows off-site image links, making [[IP harvesting]] relatively simple. Due to this, visitors are advised to turn off images when loading BoyLover.net forums if they are worried about their surfing habits being analyzed by unknown and potentially hostile parties.

==Mission statement==
The following is taken from BoyLover.net's home page:

:BoyLover.net provides a safe, supportive, and legal environment where boylovers, boys, and others interested in boylove can share thoughts, opinions, feelings, and experiences. Its forums are online meeting places where questions, advice, and debate take place freely in an atmosphere of comfort and mutual respect, and where educational material and information about boylove can be shared.

Dave Riegel has offered his Excel-formatted bibliography of boylove references for publication under FDL, but isn't sure if it would be appropriate for BoyWiki. Would it be possible for him to send it to you by e-mail? I don't have any e-mail accounts capable of receiving large attachments. See also [[BC:978709|Dave Riegel's bibliography license offer]]. --[[User:Foo|Foo]] 09:58, 13 February 2006 (EST)

:The file itself would be inappropriate, but the information inside would be perfect for an article about [[Dave Riegel]]. Some one would have to type out the data into text format manually. A spreadsheet file shouldn't be too large for email. He could certainly send it to me at hinandil@freespirits.org or boywiki@freespirits.org, and I could import it with OpenOffice. If he wishes to send it to me, he'll have to zip it and rename the file extention to something else so it isn't blocked. I like to use .notazip, some of my colleagues prefer the more boring .zzip --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 12:56, 13 February 2006 (EST)

::[[BC:978804|This post]] seems to suggest that neither the original, nor any derivatives of Dave Riegel's bibliography can be posted to BoyWiki under the topic '''Dave Riegel'''. While this may be consistent with the particulars of how the text would be published on BoyWiki, I cannot see it as consistent with the FDL, since it would represent an additional restriction not allowed under FDL, as you point out in followups to the cited post. While copyright law excludes facts from copyright, it is unclear that all aspects of what Dave has said is a very large file of references would be free from copyright. Rather than working from Dave's bibliography, I may instead look over my own reference lists to see if there is anything worthwhile that might be added to BoyWiki. Meanwhile, I can hold on to the file Dave sent in hopes that this issue may be resolved. --[[User:Foo|Foo]] 16:53, 14 February 2006 (EST)

:::This is a result of a misunderstanding just what it is that Dave Riegel sent you. I'm a bit embarrassed over it, but there's nothing to be done about that. It is better to be safe than sorry. Take a couple days to find out what Dave sent and how he wants it used. Let's make sure he understands what the GFDL means and that he has no problems with it, so you don't waste time working on a document you may not be able to submit. I really, really appreciate your patience and your dedication to making sure everything is done properly. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 17:13, 14 February 2006 (EST)

::::Your response was very helpful, and may have prevented worse. I have my own lists of references compiled from visits to libraries and on-line research, including a few of the works Dave Riegel has discussed publicly. Perhaps in time, his bibliography can be more properly incorporated from the Excel file, but at least for now, I do not want to risk the addition of further 'requirements' being added after a page based on his spreadsheet has been created. Perhaps if BoyWiki's own bibliography becomes extensive enough, Dave will be inclined to add entries of his own at some point. --[[User:Foo|Foo]] 18:14, 14 February 2006 (EST)
== Moving pages ==

Hello,

First of all, let me apologize for entering this in your user page, when it certainly belongs in a general discussion forum for BoyWiki, but I could not find such a forum here. (Admittedly, I had a hard time finding the Village Pump in w:en before I remembered its name...)

Due to my pedantry regarding compounded adjectives and nouns, I have noticed that BoyWiki currently lacks the infrastructure for moving pages; namely,
*a "move" tab alongside "edit" and "history"
*instructions for doing so ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Merging_and_moving_pages Moving pages on Wikipedia])
*a move template ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Move w:en:Template:Move])
*a "requested moves" page ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:RM w:en:WP:RM])
I would make these (except the first one) myself, but I figured it would be best to ask the Curators first, seeing as the changes are structural. (As you can probably tell, I still wish I could pledge the time necessary for becoming a Curator. :/ )

Thanks for your (and the other Curators') hard work, and keep it up.
--[[User:Asch|Asch]] 01:09, 11 September 2005 (EDT)

:Asch, this is something that is very important which is not yet in place. Only Curators and Scribes have the ability to move/rename pages at the present time. It was assumed that any page which needed moved would be caught by a Curator or that a user could run and find a Curator or Scribe. I think it's important to implement more a more formal structure so that we are prepared before we grow too large for the informal one. Instructions for moving pages are covered in the [[BoyWiki:Curator handbook|Curator]] and [[BoyWiki:Scribe handbook|Scribe handbook]]s, so I think a page to deal with this and a template would be the only things needed. I prefer things to be written from scratch, not duplicated from Wikipedia, so I will try and devote some time to creating these next week. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 18:01, 17 September 2005 (EDT)
== Thanks ==
Thanks for starting this wiki! Honestly, I think of this wiki, and the one at childlover.org as being the wings of the childlove movement. There's a critical mass of writers in the boylove and girlove
internet bulletin boards, who really would adore the opportunity to come and share their thoughts here, where the social environment won't be polluted by immature and disrespectful interjections.

I suggested a wiki several months ago, in a conversation at boychat.org with the keepers of the pedophilia.info website... The conversation we had is here: http://boychat.org/messages/873604.htm

I'm glad someone took up the agenda.--[[User:Marc|Marc]] 14:09, 16 September 2005 (EDT)

:I hadn't seen that thread. It was interesting. I think it will take a little bit of time before visitors get used to the idea of editing on a wiki, but once that happens the potential is vast. Hopefully this site will help document the history of the boylove community as well as become a more general information resource. I think the potential for more permanent, involved discussions on different issues is very exciting. I'm glad you joined us. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 18:01, 17 September 2005 (EDT)

== Wow ==

I was looking forward to contributing a lot of information -- and perhaps money -- to this project. But since it seems such a big deal has been made out of my adding a user page for Jimf3, I think I will not tarry here any longer. Other, more hospitable places await me.

By the way, I have added very simple user pages for people on other wikis (and they have for me) without any administrator or user bitching. As long as it's not vandalism, it is commonly understood throughout the wiki world to be a courtesy. [[User:Pindar|Pindar]] 10:26, 19 September 2005 (EDT)

:It was a simple request and not, I think, an unreasonable one. You are at your leisure to come and go here as you will. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 11:50, 19 September 2005 (EDT)

==Another goodbye - at least for now==

Hinandil, I honestly don't think I will invest time here, contributing to this wiki, in the near future. What happened over at the boylover.net article was very interesting. The way all of you boychat.org people aligned yourselves in that discussion, showed me something about how you feel about new people here, sharing their thoughts. I am a writer; I can't have my hands tied when I'm writing. And I know you haven't seen what I write, so you might be concerned about that. Hmmm...

There's something which sadly happens at boychat too often - and that is hostility games against those who either seem like trolls, or who ask questions that are considered dangerous to answer.

All the boards are going a lot more smoothly these days, and boychat.org is no exception... So I wonder, if the sentiment which was going on, before I entered the conversation was a new form of hostility game against other forms of boylove bulletin boards. Look at this: http://www.boywiki.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:BoyLover.net&oldid=3634

It's just a visceral attitude, that leaves me shaking my head - and, frankly, it makes me worried.

You are the owner of this board, and I respect that. I am always very careful to guage the response of the admins and management, of any bulletin board which I am newly posting at. I am there, only at that person's whim. That person can rewrite my words - that person can boot me. And, if I feel that the powers that be, are reacting towards me in a way that illustrates that I would have to feel as if my hands were tied, and I couldn't express my love for writing, in the way I would want to, then I make my exit.

Some of this is intuition, hmmmm. But, once there's a conversation which could be construed to be a confrontation of some nature, then that will be used in the future as political leverage against me. I don't consider our interaction over there the other day a confrontation, but I'm sure that others did.

Furthermore, boylover.net has been my internet home for a few years now, and if there's a point of contention there where someone understands where I come from, and he wants to harp on that, in some sense, in the future - even in subtle needling - that becomes an intolerable social situation for me. Respect is all important to me. And respect of those who I associate with is also important to me.

I wish you well in your wiki. I think that because the social parameters are different here than at a bulletin board, your experience here will be miraculous.

With a self moderating wiki - it will be a lot easier to keep peace, than it is on any bulletin board which requires administrators to do that. That healthy social environment will draw a lot of skilled writers, I'm sure. [[User:Marc|Marc]] 22:23, 23 September 2005 (EDT)

:I'm not sure why you feel that the assertion of one user that BL.net is unsafe (for verifiable reasons which he stated) was a game of hostility. The article needed rewritten, and I removed that user's comments as inappropriate and he put them right back in after me. I am a BoyWiki person, not a BoyChat person, and my duty is to the truth. What you removed as an "untrue rumor" about server seizure was not hearsay but based on statements made at BoyChat by BL.net admin. So it cannot be dismissed out of hand because simply because it is now unpopular. In an encyclopedic article here, you are bound by evidence like anyone else.

:At the moment, most of our active contributors are BoyChat posters. They cannot be faulted for bringing a BoyChat perspective with them anymore than you can for bringing a BL.net perspective with you. In order for BoyWiki to become the balanced source it wishes to be, BL.net users cannot say "Well, BL.net isn't represented on BoyWiki so we'll all stay away." They must become active here and work alongside the other communities that contribute. This is not a BoyChat opinion site, no matter what the BCers think, but as an administrator, it was not my job to change the article as long as users were discussing what to do with it.

:So, I am sorry you are leaving, because BoyWiki will be that much poorer for it. This resource cannot overcome a problem of bias by administrative decision, or it would not be biased at all. We are at the mercy of our users in that regard. I hope you return some day. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 23:41, 23 September 2005 (EDT)
== Strange categorization at Allen Ginsberg ==

At [[Allen Ginsberg]] the categorization code seems to be behaving badly, showing History twice. Or did I goof during my burst of categorical inspiration? Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have put Famous boylovers under People while keeping it under History. Please enlighten me.<br />&mdash; [[User:Asch|Asch]] [[User talk:Asch|talk to me]] 22:17, 13 October 2005 (EDT)
:On second thought I'd better put a more permanent solution into place. I assume the wiki code isn't made for categories to have multiple parents, so I'll rather make a category for famous nonboylovers under History, though I'll call it Famous people since we really can't know whether they were BLs or not, can we? Please delete Category:People.<br />&mdash; [[User:Asch|Asch]] [[User talk:Asch|talk to me]] 22:36, 13 October 2005 (EDT)
::Ack! Allan Ginsberg is still behaving badly. I'd better not touch anything.<br />&mdash; [[User:Asch|Asch]] <sup>[[User talk:Asch|talk to me]]</sup> 22:40, 13 October 2005 (EDT)
I am not sure that I like putting [[Henry de Montherlant]] not into Encyclopedia but far away under the famous boylovers and entertainment: literature categories. As a writer he deserves to be subject of an encyclopedia article proper as opposed of an entertainment one, I'm afraid. [[User:Peter|Peter]] 09:20, 23 October 2005 (EDT)

:He is in "Famous boylovers" which is an encyclopedia category as well as "Literature" which is an entertainment category (which is our current name for the 'arts and media' articles). --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 16:16, 23 October 2005 (EDT)
==Possible data loss==
As you have noticed, strange and very long codes have been appearing in place of legitimate edits in more-or-less random places. They replaced comments in [[Glossary]], &lt;nowiki&gt; data in [[Help:Editing]] and something else in [[Help:Preferences]]. I am wondering if we don't have a bit of data loss after all. Any clue?<br />&mdash; [[User:Asch|Asch]] [[User talk:Asch|talk to me]] 21:01, 19 November 2005 (EST)

Another thing that seems to have disappeared in the crash is the CSS class for styling certain boxes, as in [[Template:Fledgling]], [[BoyLover.net]], and [[BoyWiki]].<br />&mdash; [[User:Asch|Asch]] [[User talk:Asch|talk to me]] 22:05, 19 November 2005 (EST)

:I'm not sure about the codes replacing HTML comments. As far as the CSS classes disappearing, it seems that the custom interface messages are going out somewhat intermittently. They always come back, and that is when you will see the classes disappear (since the CSS definitions are part of the customization in the MediaWiki namespace). --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 14:21, 21 November 2005 (EST)
== Abrupt article-count drop ==

:That's a good question. I'll have to look into that in the next day or two. There's probably a good maintenance script that'll fix that right up! --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 04:29, 19 December 2005 (EST)

::I believe this might have something to do with the recent bot attack. Atom had to delete several dozens of articles and edits generated by robots. [[User:Still young|Still young]] 11:42, 19 December 2005 (EST)

:::Atom and Sentinel merely reverted articles in the same manner any other user would. It was I who deleted the revisions. The bots did not create new articles but merely defaced existing ones. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 13:34, 19 December 2005 (EST)

::::It looks that the bots did it again. The count has dropped to zero in several articles that have been vandalized. Any ideas to solve this? [[User:Kes|Kes]] 20:30, 29 July 2006 (EST)

:::::Yes, every article that was sanitized had the view counter reset. The solution is that I wrote down the counter for all 95 affected articles before I sanitized them, and at some point in the next week I get to poke the database manually to reset them. I'm hoping I can talk the Security Team into cooking something up at sometime in the future. ;) Thanks for the heads-up. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 02:35, 30 July 2006 (EST)

== Unnamed links ==

MediaWiki enumerates so-called 'unnamed' external links with a vaguely-standard notation. An example is this[http://www.boychat.org/], this[http://www.boychat.org/messages/12345.html], or this[http://foo.bar.com]. I referred to these as 'anonymous' links in a commit comment this morning because Wikipedia was down for about 3 minutes, making it impossible to divine their particular idiosyncratic usage. (C calls unnamed structs 'anonymous', etc.) I hope this clarifies my meaning. --[[User:Foo|Foo]] 16:19, 13 January 2006 (EST)

:My sole concern is that on a BL resource, an "anonymous" link is only really going to be understood by the average user as a link which protects the identity of the user clicking on it via proxification or redirect to wipe the HTTP-referrer data or some other magic. This needed to be refuted for security. By all means feel free to change the interwiki links back to external URLs, as long as you don't refer to them as "anonymous" ones in the edit summary. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 16:30, 13 January 2006 (EST)

::The current links are somewhat of an improvement informationally. My concern is that appending unadorned alphanumeric text to a word or sentence can hinder legibility. Would it be possible to surround unnamed BC links with brackets? --[[User:Foo|Foo]] 16:48, 13 January 2006 (EST)

:::Yes, feel free to add brackets or parentheses around the links, such as <nowiki>([[BC:xxxxx]])</nowiki>. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 17:16, 13 January 2006 (EST)

:: Incidentally, why aren't external links referer-wiped? --[[User:Foo|Foo]] 16:51, 13 January 2006 (EST)

:::External links aren't referrer-wiped because it was believed that hacking support into MediaWiki for the dereferrer script provided by Free Spirits was prohibitively complex. It was eventually decided that we had an obligation to make external links obvious, but that it was up to our users to make a decision whether or not to visit and how to protect his privacy.

:::This doesn't mean we won't start referrer-wiping in the future, but the MediaWiki wikitext parser is fragile and altering it is non-trivial. --[[User:Hínandil|Hínandil]] 17:16, 13 January 2006 (EST)
