We want to scream and fight and lash out against this fucking society that forces us to choose between our right to be heard and our right to express the fullness of our love. We are repulsed at the <i>Atlantic</i> article because the author must present himself a pathetic yes man just to be heard. <br />

Yet, if we ever want to create change, we need to hold our noses and do whatever needs to be done, even if it is distasteful. Before blacks were marching in the street demanding integration and civil rights, Jackie Robinson was holding his nose and being a “true gentleman” in the face of vitriolic hatred. He focused on the game, he let people call him nigger, he let hotels turn him away, <i>but he didn't let them drive him off the Dodgers</i>. Twenty years before the Stonewall Riots, the conservative Mattachine Society set far more modest goals that sound in many ways surprisingly like VirPed's (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mattachine_Society#Goals). The idea that a spontaneous revolution to overturn the current sexual regime will come into being out of nowhere is a fantasy that won't get us anywhere. <br />

All struggles for human rights have been hard fought, and they always start with the fight for a basic recognition of the lived experience of the oppressed by their oppressors. A world where VirPed is successful at convincing people that most pedophiles choose to be law abiding productive citizens is a world where people will start listening to and sympathizing with our suffering. This still isn't the world most of us should want to live in permanently. We must do what needs to be done without forgetting who we really are and what we really want. This isn't easy. Anytime one plays a role long enough, one risks becoming that which one pretends to be.<br />

Hence, the greatest danger that going along with VirPed poses to our cause is that too many CLs will actually drink the VirPed KoolAid and not just use it as a strategic asset. The danger is greatest for younger CLs who have never known a social reality other than the one produced by the Great Hysteria of the late 70s and 80s. For many of these CLs, the gut-level felt sense that having sex with a child is equivalent to the most horrific child abuse is so deeply conditioned that a great deal of emotional healing work in a CL-positive space will be necessary to establish a self-image free from shame and self-disgust. So that is part of the role, I see this board as having to play. Continuing to be a space that provides the emotional detox necessary to stay true to the bigger strategy. <br />

Chemical “treatments” for sex-drive also pose a major danger in this regard. If they are ever refined to the point where they work successfully with few side-effects then we can kiss our hope for change goodbye, unless we work to spread seeds of doubt in the minds of those CLs who in desperation think about choosing chemical castration. With the rapid advancement of bio-technology, it is inevitable that a “cure” for sexual desire will eventually be developed (see X-Men III). When this happens we need to have already put in place a strong bulwark of pride and belief in the goodness of CL desire or else our cause may be lost forever. <br />

<div>I'm only speaking here to those who accept that intimate sexual relationships between adults and children at their best are intrinsically non-harmful and beneficial for both parties. Obviously, this is a big caveat, but the debate about harm/benefit is a whole separate issue from the child-protection problem. I'm assuming that the age at which a person is considered an adult for the purposes of sexual contact is 16, which is consistent with many legal jurisdictions today. <br />

Okay, so how to protect kids. Younger than 12, I'd say we'll need to go with parental consent. It's not perfect, but it does offer significant protection. I'm not into little boys myself so people might accuse me of being self-serving by making the cut-off 12, but this is actually a reasonable age based on cognitive development. The APA is on record in court arguing that 12 year olds have adult-like intelligence (this was in the context of girls choosing to have abortions without parental consent.) <br />
<br />
I also think that the law might try to define age-appropriate sex acts. Obviously this would be fraught with controversy, but since we're in fantasy land right now anyway, let's just pretend that it could be done based on sound research and anatomical knowledge, rather than narrow minded prejuidice. For the youngest kids (0-7), this might amount to cuddling and light caressing of genitals. From sociological research I've seen, this is what most pedophiles interested in young kids want to do anyway, but please correct me if I'm misrepresenting anybody. From 8-11, there could be more focused genital play and maybe kissing or licking of genitals. All subject to parental approval. There would also need to a mechanism to avoid parents prostituting their kids, or otherwise making very poor decisions on their behalf. Perhaps any sexual relationship approved by parents needs also to be reported to the kid's teacher who can watch to see if the kid is showing signs of being abused (by which I mean coercion or mistreatment).<br />
<br />
For 12 to 15 years old, kids would have the option of getting a sex license from the state (as an alternative to parental consent). This would involve taking a special sex-ed class that would go into detail about safe-sex, 'no means no', how to decide when you're ready emotionally, etc. It's not ideal to have this kind of thing administered by a government bureaucracy, but I don't really see any other way to make sure that kids get all the information they need since schools can't be trusted to do the job well enough. The important thing is that getting a sex license wouldn't require parental approval. The government would not be able to refuse to grant a sex license to a kid who passed the course and the course would be designed so that it could not be passed by kids who lacked sufficiently developed cognitive capacities.<br />

Men wanting to have sex with anyone under 16 would also get a license to do so. They would take a course that trained them in safe sex practices with kids, stages of development, the details of their legal obligations, etc. <br />
<br />
Sex offender laws would also be made significantly less draconian in terms of punishments for violations of the parental consent and license requirement. Having consensual sex with an unlicenced 12 year-old might carry a steep fine plus a 5-year revocation of the man's child-sex license. The threat of having one's child-sex license taken away would be more than enough to make most men stick to the rules. A man having sex without a child-sex license would face a stiffer penalty such as one year in prison (for a first offense, higher penalties for repeat offenders).<br />

Laws about rape, prostitution, or any form of non-consensual sex with kids would remain in force. <br />
<br />
I also think that the adult partner should be legally obligated to make sure that the younger partner does not become pregnant or contract an STD. This would be a strict liability law, meaning that the adult partner is guilty if his younger partner contracts an STD from him, or gets pregnant, regardless of what precautions were taken. Penalties would vary depending on severity. They have separate arguments for attraction to girls and attraction to boys. The argument for attraction to girls is fairly straightforward. It is simply that pubescent girls are fertile, therefore, there is evolutionary selective pressure toward being attracted to them. <br />

The argument for boys is a little more complicated and interesting. Humans unlike bonobos and other great apes, have a survival strategy based on a closely bonded all male group. It is the all male group that allows humans to hunt big-game and fight skirmishes against neighboring tribes. Have you ever wanted to know the origin story of Peter Pan and Captain Hook? This two part mini-series offers a radical interpretation of the origin of the classic Barrie characters. I think it can be interpreted as a modern fable exposing how the betrayal of a boy by the man meant to be his lover, leads to the boy to become lost forever in perpetual childhood. <br />

One stereotype about boylovers is that we all suffer from Peter Pan complex, i.e., that we are immature, and seek never to grow up. There may be some of us out there who fit that mold, but many of us are mature masculine man who want to help the boys we love to grow up successfully into great men themselves. That's also what is suggested by [[Bruce Rind]]'s recent publication on the evolutionary function of man-boy love. Hence, the character of Peter Pan (the boy trapped in boyhood forever) implies an utter failure of man-boy love. This is precisely what <i>Neverland</i> mythologizes so beautifully.<br />

At the beginning of the first episode Peter and his gang of boy-thieves are running around turn-of-the-Century London under the loving care of one Jimmy Hook. Peter is devoted to Hook and clearly in love with him. Hook's emotions toward Peter seem more equivocal, but he does seem to genuinely care for all the boys. At this point in the story, Peter's greatest dream is to become Hook's partner in the petty crime business. Far from wanting to remain a child, he can't wait to grow up! His desire to grow up is intimately linked with his love and admiration for Hook. He wants to be just like his mentor, he wants one day to be accepted and recognized as an equal by him. This is the natural way of things.<br />

Then, Hook and the lost boys are transported to Neverland by a magic orb leaving Peter behind. They make their way to the sea, and are captured by pirates. Back in London, Peter tracks down the orb and follows them, but he seems to be too late. The pirate captain is a beautiful woman Elizabeth Bonny. She and Hook begin a romance driven by their mutual lust for power. Peter goes to the pirate ship to save the boys and Hook. After saving the boys, he goes back for Hook and finds him in the captain's quarters having just had sex with Bonny. This is a clearly a romantic betrayal in Peter's mind. He is disgusted by the woman, and begs Hook to come back to him. Peter is like the knight trying to rescue his beloved “princess” Hook who has been locked up in the tower by the wicked villain Woman.<br />

Much and more happens, but skipping forward a little, Hook still seems to have feelings for Peter, and Peter hasn't given up entirely on Hook. At this point in the narrative Hook seems to be torn between his boylove feelings (which if he only listened to them would lead him back to Peter and off the path of villainy) and his woman-love feelings, which are leading him toward becoming power mad and cruel. So this narrative is pretty clearly constructed to make the figure of the boy-lover into the absent hero of the story. <br />

In the end, Hook's woman-love and power-love win out. His apparent boylove for Peter is revealed to have been a sham all along. He says how he only loved Peter because he saw Peter's mother in him, but now that Peter stands on the brink of maturation, he can see the father, i.e., the potential man in the boy, and now he has only hatred for him. The true boy-lover, loves the potential man in the boy, and helps the boy separate his identity from the mother-world. Hook does exactly the opposite. He emotionally punishes Peter for starting to grow up, he rejects utterly the emerging man within the boy. Hence, Hook is a totally failure as a boy-lover and he thus loses Peter's love and becomes the cruel merciless villain Captain Hook.<br />

Throughout the film, Peter's goal is to return to London with his 'crew' and continue life there. Peter and the lost boys still want go back to reality and grow up. They want to become men. It's only after the terrible betrayal by the man he loves that Peter loses all faith in adulthood. In the last scene of the film, Peter suggests that they all stay in Neverland forever and have adventures, never having to grow up. This is clearly not his first choice, but with the loss of his love for Hook, and hence his disillusionment with Man, this is the only option left. The magic orb that could transport them back to London is “buried under a thousand tons of rubble”. Symbolically, the loss and grief he felt at losing Hook is the rubble that has buried his only gateway to world of adulthood. <br />

There is a lot more great symbolism in the show that elaborates upon and supports the general theme I've been suggesting. Overall a totally brilliant work of art!<br />
