According to conversations [[Jimf3]] had with Toby and with Toby's brother, Robbie had been mentoring Toby over the internet and then later persuaded him to relocate to [[Kentucky]] from [[Florida]], helping him obtain financial aid from the school where Robbie taught. Toby's family came to know Robbie and supported the move.

When he was murdered, Toby had booked a flight back to Florida in order to be closer to a new romantic interest in his life, a young man near his own age. Again according to Jimf3 who knows the young man in question, Toby had indicated that he was leaving Robbie permanently. Thus, jealousy would seem to be a reasonable assumption in terms of motive for the crime.
