Request that local description page for File:BLogo 930x818.png be unprotected. __meco (talk) 18:45, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

As far as I can tell it is not protected. --Etenne (talk) 13:23, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
I receive this error message: "Permission error - You do not have permission to create pages, for the following reason: This page has been protected from editing because it is included in the following page, which is protected with the "cascading" option turned on: " __meco (talk) 18:02, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
Can you explain to me what is your reason for wanting this? --Etenne (talk) 19:28, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
In order to add the local page to Category:BoyWiki-en images. __meco (talk) 19:57, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
See I am not understanding what the purpose of doing that is? It seems redundant.--Etenne (talk) 20:45, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
I want to start out with simply adding all image files to this category. Then, eventually create more specific categories for different types of images. __meco (talk) 14:23, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
Why not do that on Media wiki. If you want to categorize, I can give you access. However, we want to add to, not recreate. I assume as a European, you can speak more then one language and can understand the French and German a bit. Also, you have to be able to take advice from the French curator as he his the person who is primary on that part of BoyWiki. --Etenne (talk) 14:34, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
Doing the categorizing simply on Media wiki is not a good solution. Then those categories would be sequestered from the category structure of BoyWiki/en. Category surfing also would miss these categories in that case. Besides, I don't want to be the only person who was expected (or allowed) to edit the media pages. __meco (talk) 15:26, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
I am still not seeing the benefit of doing this (other then wasting disk space which is not unlimited). How does this improve the content of BoyWiki?--Etenne (talk) 15:33, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
Arguments about limited disk space when it comes to text files are usually considered to have become obsolete by the early 1990s. Unless the hard disks available to BoyWiki are in the <100MB range this should not be an issue. Please elaborate on your reasoning if you do find hard disk usage to be a real issue. Being able to categorize media files has the same advantages as being able to categorize other information content. It makes it feasible and convenient to browse a category structure looking for specific information and surf to related content. Without categorizing our media content users will find this quite impracticable when it comes to media files. __meco (talk) 16:13, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
OK, I will run this past the BoyWiki Council and see if they agree. This is not a question I know anything about. --Etenne (talk) 16:18, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
Exactly what are you contemplating running past the Council? It's not as if I'm not already categorizing image files. __meco (talk) 16:38, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Categorizing media files locally Posted by Etenne on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 17:22:55

One of the en.boywiki users created these pages on en boywiki

https://www.boywiki.org/en/File:Nambla2.png

https://www.boywiki.org/en/File:NAMBLA_LOGO.jpg

He wants to add more. The discussion is found here:

https://www.boywiki.org/en/BoyWiki:Requests_for_page_protection/unprotection#Current_requests

Is this something that I should be allowing or not?

--Etenne (talk) 16:51, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

I caanot help thinking that you haven't grasped the issue at hand. I am not asking for permission to categorize media files. There is obviously no prohibition against that, and I'm consequently not asking you to lift any such. The issue is that the file in question is protected because it comes under the general protection of content that is featured on the Main page. __meco (talk) 17:10, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
Yes but as you are the first person to ever do this, I am not sure if it isn't just a glitch in the system that we did not anticipate. --Etenne (talk) 17:24, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
It's a security feature that makes sense since vandalizing stuff that's displayed on the Main page has more serious consequences than vandalizing anything else. However, with the size of this wiki and the option for anons to edit disabled, having this level of edit protection is mostly unnecessary and makes for cumbersome processes, in my opinion. __meco (talk) 17:43, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Response from the BoyWiki Council

"It is true that it seems redundant. And I do not see the interest to local categories on commons images.

But insofar as it is a link to media images which takes up little space and not a copy of images, and that these pseudo-pages belonging to the "File" namespace and do not clutter main namespace, they do not bother us too much."

So it is OK but I still wish you would spend more time adding content but that is your choice. I will try to unblock that image when I find the time. --Etenne (talk) 20:40, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
This image is unblocked I believe --Etenne (talk) 14:03, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
OK, I've categorized it. It's not in use anywhere though, but now at least it will be visible through the category page. Now, the image I originally requested still needs to be categorized. Rather than unprotecting it, perhaps you could simply add [[Category:BoyWiki-en images]] to the local description page? __meco (talk) 15:15, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

Request edit to protected page

I would like Category:Inactive BoyWiki editors to be added to edit-protected user page User:Keeper. __meco (talk) 19:05, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
