Nineteenth-century Spanish educator. When fired from his university job for political reasons, founded the very influential "Institución Libre de Enseñanza" (Free Teaching Institute). Revered figure of the Spanish left in the twentieth century, two generations of people.

He lived a chaste life and apparently had no sexual outlet of any kind. At the height of the masturbation mania, he probably didn't do that either.

He was known at the time as "the Spanish Sophocles."
