New Mexico is a state located in the southwestern and western regions of the United States, admitted to the union as the 47th state in 1912. It is usually considered one of the Mountain States. The eastern border of New Mexico lies along 103° W longitude with the state of Oklahoma, and three miles (5 km) west of 103° W longitude with Texas. On the southern border, Texas makes up the eastern two-thirds, while the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Sonora make up the western third, with Chihuahua making up about 90% of that. The western border with Arizona runs along the 32nd meridian west from Washington longitude. The southwestern corner of the state is known as the Bootheel. The 37th parallel north latitude parallel forms the northern boundary with Colorado. The states New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Utah come together at the Four Corners in the northwestern corner of New Mexico.

In 2015, HB 440 was introduced, which defined a "Unit of Possession" for child pornography to be each individual image; it overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives. This legislation is the result of a New Mexico Supreme Court decision which declared the current statute vague because it fails to define where one episode of possession ends and anther begins.[1] Most states treat each image as a separate count, which results in extremely long sentences. New Mexico is unique due to the Court's ruling in Olsson, which now results in multiple images merging into one single count. HB 440 ultimately died in the Senate due to concern that enactment could easily result in sentences exceeding 100 years. Republican Rep. Sarah Maestas Barnes claimed that those who opposed the bill "defend predators who would sexually exploit children."[2]
