Stigmatization is a process, described by David Finkelhor, in which negative connotations concerning abuse (badness, shamefulness, guilt) are communicated to the child and subsequently enter the child's self-image. Stigmatization may lead to low self-esteem, self-injurious behaviour, thoughts of suicide, and identification with other stigmatized behaviors (drug abuse, prostitution).
