I disagree with the assertion that "outing" is a short form for one's own coming out. I've only ever heard it used as something some person or some action does to someone else. dictionary.com, in its explication of outing as a transitive verb, seems to concur with my stance. And wikipedia has a specific entry for outing that leaves no wiggle room. --Afin 19:30, 26 September 2005 (EDT)

I'm inclined to agree. I observe that "outing oneself" is used as a synonym for "coming out", but "outing" by itself is generally a different kettle of fish and should have its own article.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that the Wikipedia article refers to outing in the media, while the outing that common on-line-boylover-community usage refers to need not be quite so public. Isn't it outing (BL style) when somebody reveals your sexuality to your family or friends?--Asch 20:37, 28 September 2005 (EDT)
Indeed, in the 1990s, outing of closeted gay political figures was a tactic employed by certain activist organizations. "Out" Magazine became well known for a while as a conduit of this practice. In my experience, "outing" has only one meaning - "To disclose the sexual orientation of a person against his will."

I've re-separated the articles, expanding Outing a bit. --Asch 21:36, 28 September 2005 (EDT)
