Tell the Schools that it is not a choice

Over the the last several months, numerous articles have have been published asserting that schools are teaching children as young as six or seven that they have a choice regarding their sexual orientation and gender identity. This is the absolute wrong information to be teaching children.

In the New York post, Betsy McCaughey the former Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1995 to 1998 writes, "Children — as young as 5 — are being encouraged to disregard their anatomy and choose their gender.... In school it’s cool to be anything but heterosexual." Why are schools teaching information that have been scientifically demonstrated time and time again to be untrue? The mainstream scientific community and the various psychological associations have for several decades now concluded that sexual orientation and gender identity are not a conscious choice and that they can not be voluntarily changed. Educators need to be helping the heterosexual children as well as sexual and gender minority students to understand that they cannot simply choose a different sexual orientation or gender identity. Parents also need to understand that no matter what teachers are telling their heterosexual children, their sexual orientation and gender identity cannot be changed. Though leading sexual researchers now believe that there is some sexual and gender "fluidity" during the course of people lives, these are developmental changes and are not choices that people can actively make.

This misinformation that sexual orientation and gender identity can be altered or that a person can simply choose a different sexual orientation and gender identity can lead to some very dire consequences. In the early part of the 20th century, medical and mental health professionals believed that sexual orientation in particular could be changed. It was a common misconception that heterosexuality was normal and all other deviations were a pathology.

These primitive and unscientific beliefs lead to the development of conversion therapy, also called “reparative therapy”, a type of "Behavior modification" treatment that uses "aversive conditioning techniques", more commonly know as torture, to alter sexual orientation. Treatment methods could include: electric shock, drugs that produced painful effects or produced nausea while the child was shown same-sex erotic imagery. Children were taught techniques to act more like the heterosexual children and received various punishments and consequences for failing to meet expectations. Threats were a common part of conversion therapy for children, including that they and their family would be killed if they did not change. However, conversion therapy was not the only strange and abusive pseudo-medical treatment aimed at changing sexual orientation. Eugen Steinach believed homosexuality was rooted in a man’s testicles. This theory led to testicle transplantation experiments in the 1920s during which gay men were castrated, then given “heterosexual” testicles”, which of course their bodies immediately rejected. Another method included giving lobotomies to gays, thousands of young gay males had a metal spike inserted into the corner of each eye-socket, hammered through the thin bone there with a mallet, then moved it back and forth, severing the connections to the prefrontal cortex in the frontal lobes of the brain in a futile efforts to change their sexual orientation. Nowadays, most places in the United States and countries around the world have outlawed "conversion therapy". It's practice has repeatedly been linked to to depression, anxiety, drug use, homelessness, and suicide in it's recipients and is now considered extremely unethical. In the 21st century, it is equally as unethical to tell heterosexual children that they have a choice.

Instead of teaching children that they have a choice, schools need to convey the message that, "It's OK to be who you are, but you can't be something you are not." Heterosexual children in particular need to be taught that their sexual orientation was set/fixed long before they entered school and that they can't simply choose a different one, no more then their gay and transgendered peers can change their orientations and gender identities. It is natural for children, especially very young children, to over-empathize with their peers and want to be just like them, they might want to dress like them and act in a similar way. However, gender, sexual or cultural appropriation is never OK. No parent would send their child to school in black face just because his friends might be black and he admires their culture. Equally, parents of heterosexual children need to be cognizant of the image their children are projecting that could be considered offensive. As Betsy McCaughey the former Lieutenant Governor of New York indicated: in some schools, it very well could be considered "cool" to be gay or transgendered but all the kids need to be sent the message that it's equally cool to be who and what they are..... being who you are should always be the goal and be considered normal. If we allow teachers to socially engineer children into something they are not by insisting they have a choice, the consequences could be severe.
