Hi back, Asch. :) --Sentinel 12:57, 21 January 2006 (EST)

Seems the underground, offline BL communication network is working! ;)

Su-uch an honor to have you here. ((hug)) How come I've never seen you at SQR chat?  :( --Hínandil 22:01, 10 September 2005 (EDT)

Appointed as a Scribe

Dear Asch,

It is my deep honor to inform you that the BoyWiki Council has bestowed upon you the title of Scribe. Based on your obvious ability and understanding of wikis and your eagerness to help out, you now have the ability to move, protect and unprotect pages, and edit protected pages (which we trust you to use to combat vandalism and edit wars, as opposed to changing interface messages or some such).

Please continue to offer your much-appreciated help and suggestions. It is because of users like you that BoyWiki will one day be a success.

For the BoyWiki Council, Hínandil 20:44, 12 September 2005 (EDT)

Thank you very much: I am honored to be given this responsibility, and will do my best to live up to it. (Even if it means resisting the urge to change interface messages... ;) I believe I already have expressed my excitement about BoyWiki and my hopes for its success. Being a part of its story is a wonderful privilege. Thank you again.--Asch 22:06, 12 September 2005 (EDT)

Jeremy Sumptuous

Sure you didn't mean to write Jeremy Sumpter in your user page? :) Still young 05:52, 13 December 2005 (EST)

Whoops, must've been a Freudian slip. :p (Try clicking the link, btw.)

Article count

[moved from article:]

  • Investigate source code of {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} for clues why articles are numbered at 85 rather than a hundred more.
  • Or do some math. There are 36 fledglings. There are 38 redirects, according to a quick count I did just now using memory. There are 266 articles in the main namespace, according to a count performed by
    a:before { content: counter(articles) ". "; counter-increment: articles 1;}
    . (Someone with SQL access to the database should really be doing this!) That leaves 192 articles, which seems to fit what I remember from before the crash. It also fits the list on Special:Shortpages. What can explain the missing 107? A limit of 1,400 bytes in article size?
Hi, Asch. The following query:
select count(*) from page where page_namespace=0 and page_is_redirect=0 and page_len > 0;
gives me the same result: 192, so I'm going to go ahead and update the count manually. It seems from the mailing list that {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} is indeed buggy sometimes, but I can't say what would have caused the number to drop. --Hínandil 21:54, 2 January 2006 (EST)
Thanks for fixing this! It wasn't a grave problem but it was bugging me a bit. I want BoyWiki to look successful as well as being successful! ;)

Well, I got that SQL query from the mediawiki-l list last week but the best "official" count would also only count articles with an [ in them. So I was holding out on that but just decided it was going to be easier to fudge it. A quick visual scan of Special:Shortpages showed that they all looked like articles to me, so there we go.  :) It was bothering me too but more important things delayed me. I'm really happy to have it fixed, though! --Hínandil 15:56, 4 January 2006 (EST)

If you're able to monitor the number of articles with {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} is there a way to monitor the number of edits per user? --Fleetwood 12:04, 11 June 2006 (EDT)

As far as I know, there is no built-in tool in Mediawiki that does this. However, it is relatively simple for an external tool to analyze the database and count user edits. Kate's Tool is one such tool, but the author's installation doesn't cover BoyWiki (and for the time being not even Wikipedia). The few with access to the BoyWiki database could potentially install Interiot's Tool and check for themselves.
But a warning from Kate about editcountitis may be worth noting before embarking on such a project.

Coding Ideas

The idea of a Lifeline status indicator on the main BC index has been raised several times. This can be done with the aid of a simple SSI, requiring a small configuration change to the relevant directory in the vhost for that domain. The script is already available as we could just use the same one that provides the indication on the LL page. However, this is really a BoyChat administration issue as it is they who decide what goes on the BC index or not. Despite the regular recurrence of this idea it has been consistently rejected by BC admin for several reasons. Even among LL volunteers there is no firm consensus on the issue. -- Atom 17:59, 29 March 2006 (EST)

Thanks for the explanation! I did think the lack of such a feature hardly could be due to programming difficulties.
