On possède peu de détails sur la jeunesse de Nicolas Gombert. Il serait né vers 1495, sans doute quelque part entre Lille et Saint-Omer, vraisemblablement à La Gorgue. Il aurait étudié la musique auprès de Josquin des Prés à l’époque où celui-ci, vieillissant, s’était retiré à Condé-sur-l’Escaut, où il demeura jusqu’à sa mort en [[1521]].<ref>Selon le musicologue allemand Hermann Finck.</ref><br />

En [[1526]], Gombert fut engagé comme chantre à la cour de l’empereur Charles Quint, et peut-être aussi comme compositeur. Un document de [[1529]] le mentionne comme ''magister puerorum'' (« [[maître de chœur|maître des enfants]] ») de la chapelle royale. Avec l’ensemble du chœur, il accompagnait l’empereur lors de ses nombreux déplacements, dont de nombreuses villes ont gardé souvenir dans leurs archives. En raison de son talent, il eut dans toute l’Europe une grande influence musicale, contribuant à répandre jusque dans la péninsule ibérique la tradition polyphonique de l’école franco-flamande.<br />

Gombert entra dans les ordres vers [[1530]], et il poursuivit probablement jusqu’à la [[prêtre catholique|prêtrise]]. Il reçut alors divers bénéfices d’évêchés tels que Courtrai, Lens, Metz et Béthune. À la chapelle impériale, il resta le « maître des enfants » jusqu’à une date imprécise entre [[1537]] et [[1540]], lorsque Thomas Crecquillon puis Cornelius Canis lui succédèrent. Mais il ne reçut jamais officiellement le titre de « maître de chapelle » (directeur musical), lequel fut attribué successivement à Adrien Thibaut et Thomas Crecquillon. Pendant tout ce temps, il remplit aussi le rôle officieux de compositeur de la cour, célébrant par ses œuvres les nombreux événements clés de la vie de Charles Quint.<br />
