Description: Youth Places His Hand On Boy's Shoulder. Attic red-figure psykter by Smikros, c. 510 BCE. Malibu, J. Paul Getty Museum, 82.AE.53.

This wine cooler displays four courting pairs in a continuous wrap-around sequence: each pair represents a different level of interaction. In this pair, a youth reaches out to a boy, who appears cautiously receptive, as suggested by the mutual eye contact and by his own right arm, which reaches out to the youth, in the direction of the youth's visible penis. Interestingly, this youth is labelled with the name Euphronios, a well-known vase painter contemporary to Smikros, and the boy is labelled "the fair Leagros," a famous noble eromenos celebrated on many vases of the period.
