Description: Youths Watch, Crown, And Kiss Boy Athletes. Attic red-figure amphora by the Dikaios Painter, c. 510 BCE. Paris, Musée du Louvre, G 45.
Three courting pairs in a gymnastic setting, representing a progression of intimacies. The youth on the right merely watches and admires a naked boy athlete, as he does leg stretches. The youth on the left crowns the boy with a discus, and the youth in the center embraces his admired love object and prepares to kiss him. The movement is from mere looking to touching and rewarding to kissing.
