The history of psychological trauma theories concerning adult-child sex goes back at least to the 19th century. Eminent French forensic physician Ambroise Tardieu documented hundreds of cases of sexual abuse (mainly of children), carefully delineating the serious psychological consequences of assault. Drawing on the work of French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot, Freud’s early work insisted that the “ultimate cause of hysteria always is the sexual seduction of a child by an adult”.
