Judd Marmor was an outspoken opponent of the psychoanalytic view, who said "It is our task as psychiatrists to be healers of the distressed, not watchdogs of our social mores." He argued that, like homosexuality, celibacy and vegetarianism could be considered violations of a natural norm, yet they are generally not seen as illnesses.
