The term "sodomy" was created by Christians who blamed the behavior of the residents of the ancient city of Sodom for the destruction of their city by God.

The exact behavior of the citizens of Sodom that led to the city's downfall is disputed. Some claim that the wrath of God was brought about due to their inhospitable behavior towards visitors. (See the Biblical description of Lot.) Others claimed that it was the sexual activity -- which was never specified -- that cause their destruction.

'''Sodomy''' is a strongly-emotive term of religious origin, derived from the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in chapters 18 and 19 of the Book of Genesis in the Bible of the Hebrews, or the so-called Old Testament of the Christian Bible. It is generally a useless term, used mostly by [{{w|Erotophobia erotophobes,}}though it is commonly found in law, in the mass media, and in other publications.

In Christian-influenced cultures, sodomy usually refers to some unspecified - or poorly specified - act of socially-disapproved sexual behavior.

==Usage==
In common usage, it may refer to:
* anal sexual intercourse
* oral sexual intercourse
* sexual intercourse with a non-human animal (bestiality)
* any non-procreative sexual activity
* any sexual act deemed to be "unnatural" or immoral

noun
As can be seen from the above listing, "sodomy" could be used to describe almost any kind of sexual activity.
any sexual intercourse held to be abnormal; specif.,

    bestiality
Most people (wrongly) assume that "sodomy" means "anal sexual intercourse". The terms "sodomy", "sodomize" and "sodomites" have been used historically to condemn homosexuality. Current usage is often found in the media to mis-characterize, attack, and demonize "pedophiles" who "sodomize" minors.
anal intercourse, esp. between two male persons

Origin of sodomy
To "sodomize" a minor may mean:
Middle English sodomie ; from Sodome, Sodom
* to have anal sex with a male minor, either as the passive or active partner
* to have anal sex with a female minor, the man being the "active" partner (the one inserting his penis), and the girl the "passive".
* to have oral sex with a minor male or female, either as the passive or active partner (fellatio or cunnilingus)
* to engage in any kind of sexual activity with a male minor, as this activity can never be "procreative" sex or result in pregnancy.
* to engage in any sexual act of any kind with a male minor, as sexual activity between males is deemed to be "unnatural" or immoral
* to engage in any sexual act of any kind with a minor female which some may choose to describe as being "unnatural" or immoral

sodomy [(sod-uh-mee)]

Sexual intercourse that is not the union of the genital organs of a man and

a woman. The term is most frequently applied to anal intercourse between

two men or to sexual relations between people and animals. (See

pederast.)

Note: According to the Bible, God destroyed the cities of Sodom and

Gomorrah for unacceptable sexual practices, apparently including anal

intercourse between men. Sodomy takes its name from the city of Sodom.

Note: Many governments have laws against sodomy. These laws are

difficult to enforce, however, and many people believe they violate

personal privacy.

noncoital carnal copulation. The term is understood in history, literature,

and law in several senses: (1) as denoting any homosexual practices

between men, in allusion to the biblical story of Sodom (Genesis 18:19),

(2) as denoting anal intercourse, (3) as synonymous with bestiality or

zoophilia (i.e., sexual relations between human beings and animals), and

(4) as comprehending a number of other sexual activities, ranging from

sexual contacts with minors to oral-genital contacts and oral intercourse

between adults.

Sodomy is a crime in some jurisdictions and is condemned as a mark of

abnormality in many others. Some legal codes provide penalties as severe

as life imprisonment for homosexual intercourse, even if the relations are

voluntary and between legally consenting adults. So-called sodomy laws,

actually proscribing a variety of sexual contacts, appear to apply even to

married couples. No such regulations are found in the codes of Denmark,

France, Italy, Sweden, or Switzerland, among others. The Wolfenden

committee in England and the American Law Institute in the United States

recommended abolition of criminal provisions in this area, except in

cases involving violence, children, or public solicitation to commercial

vice. This position was adopted in Illinois in 1961 (and later in numerous

other U.S. states) and in England in 1967. In 1986 the U.S. Supreme

Court upheld a Georgia antisodomy law in Bowers v. Hardwick, but the

decision was reversed in 2003, when the court struck down a Texas law

that criminalized consensual sex between adults of the same gender. With

the court's ruling in Lawrence v. Texas, antisodomy statues in 12 other

U.S. states were effectively overturned.

Derivation of the term

Sodomy is a strongly-emotive term of religious origin, derived from the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in chapters 18 and 19 of the Book of Genesis in the Bible of the Hebrews, or the so-called Old Testament of the Christian Bible. It is generally a useless term, used mostly by [Erotophobia erotophobes, though it is commonly found in law, in the mass media, and in other publications.

In Christian-influenced cultures, sodomy usually refers to some unspecified - or poorly specified - act of socially-disapproved sexual behavior.

Usage

In common usage, it may refer to:

  • anal sexual intercourse
  • oral sexual intercourse
  • sexual intercourse with a non-human animal (bestiality)
  • any non-procreative sexual activity
  • any sexual act deemed to be "unnatural" or immoral

As can be seen from the above listing, "sodomy" could be used to describe almost any kind of sexual activity.

To "sodomize" a minor may mean:

  • to have anal sex with a male minor, either as the passive or active partner
  • to have anal sex with a female minor, the man being the "active" partner (the one inserting his penis), and the girl the "passive".
  • to have oral sex with a minor male or female, either as the passive or active partner (fellatio or cunnilingus)
  • to engage in any kind of sexual activity with a male minor, as this activity can never be "procreative" sex or result in pregnancy.
  • to engage in any sexual act of any kind with a male minor, as sexual activity between males is deemed to be "unnatural" or immoral
  • to engage in any sexual act of any kind with a minor female which some may choose to describe as being "unnatural" or immoral
