Nineteenth-century Spanish educator. When fired from his university job for political reasons, founded the very influential "Institución Libre de Enseñanza" (Free Teaching Institute). Revered figure of the Spanish left in the twentieth century, two generations of people.

He was known at the time as "the Spanish Sophocles."
