John Whitmire is a Texas state senator who favors giving sex offenders the chance to rehabilitate themselves and find work. He advocated for legislation to remove registered sex offenders' job and employer from public view on the Texas Public Sex Offender Registry. When asked "Are you comfortable with registered sex offenders getting licenses from the state that allows them access to people’s homes?" he responded, "Sure. Well it depends on . . . you have to be very specific. Access to whose home, what job description? We've got electricians, plumbers, real estate agents . . . If they've been approved and licensed by a state agency, and the homeowner invites them in, it's not a major concern. There are some sex offenders that are not predators. There's some sex offenders that have outgrown their offense, so it depends on the circumstances."[1]
