BoyWiki Dictionary: Slippage (dictionary)
n

Slippage (from the verb "to slip") occurs when a word or phrase takes on newer, broader meanings, often to the point where the meaning no longer is objectively useful and/or valid.

Many words relating to the topic of child sexuality have undergone great "slippage" since the moral panic over (the supposed) "harms" to young people who are involved in adult/child or adult/young person sexual relationships began in the mid-1970s. Examples of words or expressions which have undergone "slippage" are:

  • rape
  • abuse
  • exploitation
  • trauma
  • sexual abuse
  • grooming
  • denial
  • predator
  • pedophile
  • high risk
  • victim
  • perpetrator
  • prostitution
  • trafficking
  • pornography
  • nudity
  • inappropriate
  • harmful
