BoyWiki Dictionary: Slippage (dictionary)
n

Slippage (from the verb "to slip") occurs when a word or phrase is given newer, broader meanings--usually for political purposes--and often by feminists, other moral crusaders, politicians, etc., to the point where the meaning of the transformed word or expression no longer may be objectively useful and/or valid.

Many words relating to the topic of child sexuality have undergone great "slippage" since the moral panic over (the supposed) "harms" to young people who are involved in adult/child or adult/young person sexual relationships began in the mid-1970s. Examples of words or expressions which have undergone "slippage" are:

  • sex
  • sexual
  • rape
  • abuse
  • sexual abuse
  • exploitation
  • trauma
  • grooming
  • denial
  • predator
  • pedophile
  • high risk
  • victim
  • perpetrator
  • prostitution
  • trafficking
  • pornography
  • nudity
  • inappropriate
  • harmful
