The failure of the Mermaids organization to protect it's staff from sensationalized and misleading accusations is a blatant disregard to the ethics and values of the mental health profession and maybe indicative that what their detractors are saying is correct and that they are ignoring health and safety issues and not following the standards of practice for the treatment of transgender youth.

Transsexual group caves into pressure
by Staff Writer - October 6, 2022

Dr Jacob Breslow was forced resigned as trustee of transgender charity Mermaids after it was publicized that he spoke at a conference organized by the mental health advocacy group
B4U-ACT, in 2011. Several News organizations have recently published misleading articles that lead the reader to believe that B4U-ACT is a political organization seeking to "normalize pedophilia". Mermaids has also recently come under fire in the UK for allegedly recommending unsafe procedures be provided to transsexual youth.

Mermaids says the organization is "completely at odds" with
B4U-ACT values of seeking to advocate for safe and effective mental health services for minor attracted people, provided in a way that ensures dignity and respect of the person seeking treatment. They also object to the use of the term "minor attracted person".

The goals of B4U-ACT as stated on their website are:

  • To publicly promote services and resources for self-identified individuals (adults and adolescents) who are sexually attracted to children and seek such assistance
  • To educate mental health providers regarding the approaches helpful for such individuals
  • To develop a pool of providers who agree to serve these individuals and abide by B4U-ACT’s Principles and Perspectives of Practice
  • To educate the public regarding issues faced by these individuals

The failure of the Mermaids organization to protect it's staff from sensationalized and misleading accusations is a blatant disregard to the ethics and values of the mental health profession and maybe indicative that what their detractors are saying is correct and that they are ignoring health and safety issues and and encouraging young people to engage in unsafe practices.
